I purchased this unit to fit in a 48" wide recess in my living group next to the fireplace. The unit shipped in two boxes and arrived direct from the manufacturer in good condition and well packed. Assembly was performed without help on a fold out table in the garage. There were only a few minor imperfections (dings, scratches) here and there but nothing major. You should plan for 5-6 hours total for assembling both the base and the hutch. As with most flat packed kits there are pilot holes for the self tapping wood screws and most were spot on. Quality is a step above lesser priced flat packs and each unit is held together with cam lock screws that are anchored into the wood with plastic inseerts and not glue.
PROS:
Easy to assemble.
Great way to utilize a small space and hide clutter.
CONS:
It's a customer assembled flat pack.
More expensive than a desk or open shelf unit.
I probably could have found something similar from a local office or furniture store and not have to have assemble the unit myself.
ASSEMBLY NOTES: The drawers are held together with screws and there are no dowels, leveling, or corner guides other than the pilot holes. I had to tighten the screws half way to make sure each drawer was square. The bottom of the hanging file drawer is attached with screws from the underside of the drawer so you should not allow any heavy items to rest on the bottom. While screwing together the media boxes for the hutch (press board) I stripped a few holes. During assembly of both the hutch and base you get the sense that the unit may not be very sturdy.
Overall all the parts for both units fit together comfortably with a large range of tolerance. Once I had this fully assembled it seemed very acceptable for my purpose. The pull out keyboard drawer is sturdy and deep enough to fit a standard size laptop and allows ample leg room. The hutch is 17" deep and might not be deep enough those with an old style computer monitor.
